11/05  Blitzing the Waiting List

We currently have 25 people on the waiting list for a plot. The person at the top of the list has been waiting since March 2007. We also have a fair few people who are not maintaining their plots and some who appear not to have cultivated their plots at all this year.

We are doing a spot check tomorrow and will contact any plot-holder who appears to have an untended plot. We're not looking for pristine manicured beds, but holders of neglected plots will be sent a friendly reminder and given the option to hand over their plot to one of the desperate people on the waiting list. If you are not sure whether you want to continue with your plot then please contact Robin at robin@cambourneallotment.org, there is someone who would be overjoyed to get their hands on it.

Likewise, if you don't have a plot and are interested in getting one then please send your contact details to Robin.

As we start a new gardening year I though that I would see if there were any volunteers to learn how to make compost and to help maintain the communal compost area.

22/06  Allotment Mailing Lists

I've set up two mailing lists for the allotments to (hopefully) disuade people from copying and pasting addresses from old messages sent from cambourne_allotment@hotxxx.com.

There are a number of problems with the way people are using the unnoficial list of email addresses:

  • People come and go but the list is not updated
  • People's work email addresses have found their way onto the list
  • People have no way of opting-out of receiving messages once someone has got hold of the list
  • Some people might not like having their email address publicly visible

05/06  Allotment Security (again)

Most of you will be aware of the increase in anti-social behaviour and under age drinking here in Cambourne. This is something that affects us allotment holders directly. There is meeting on Tuesday at the Hub to address the issues. Here is the announcement from Ruth Poulton (PC chairman):

04/05  Dawn Chorus

Jenny Mackay from the Wildlife Trust needs your help at the community orchard this Sunday. They are also holding a 'dawn chorus' bird-spotting walk. Details below:

"We will be working at the Community orchard next to the allotments again this Sunday 7th May. The trees which volunteers helped us to plant in December are doing well and there are a few spring jobs that need doing. We will be installing some benches, painting a sign and sowing some wildflower seeds. We are meeting at the orchard at 10am.

That same morning we are also holding a Dawn chorus walk to enjoy one of the most spectacular times of day. There will be bird experts on hand to explain what we hear and a breakfast of hot drinks and muffins when we get back. The cost is £2 per person. Please call to book on 01954 713500."

13/04  Allotment Security

I'm sure you have all heard about the recent break-in at the allotments. We need to gather opinions about how best to improve the gate security. John Vickery is looking into buying more appropriate locks and we need to get some opinions from plot holders.

01/11  The Community Orchard

Update: Despite the horrible Cambourne 'soil' we managed to prepare most of the planting holes this Sunday. The trees are arriving next Sunday and help is needed for the actual planting. Same time and place.

The Wildlife Trust are organising an event on Sunday 4th December from 10am to start work on the Community Orchard. Local residents are invited to help prepare the ground and start planting trees.

Jenny Mackay, the Cambourne officer for the Wildlife Trust, says:

"I am the Wildlife Trusts Cambourne Officer responsible for looking after many of the green spaces around Cambourne. I am not an experienced vegetable grower myself but we have a vegetable plot in our wildlife garden here at the Manor house that I have been learning to look after this year and have thoroughly enjoyed it.

02/09  Gate Combination Codes

UPDATE: Wed 7th September Louise couldn't change the combinations of two of the locks (side pedestrian gate and bottom lock on main car gate). She will contact the developers to get them replaced. Until then, use the old combination. The other locks have been changed as detailed in the email that was sent out.

The combination codes on the access gates to the allotments will be changed next Wednesday, 7th September 2005.

An email/notice will be posted to all plot holders closer to the date with the new details.
